THE PRECIOUS! PRETTY! POWERFUL! GIRLS BOOK CLUB HELPS GIRLS SOLVE PROBLEMS AND BECOME POWERFUL COMMUNICATORS!
Club wants to help girls gain a sense of identity and purpose before peer pressure intensifies...
““I believe that we need to reach girls before the cutting, self destructive behavior and drug use starts. Many of the programs available today target older girls. We want to reach girls while they are still young so that when the peer pressure intensifies, they will have a foundation of self confidence. The Precious! Pretty! Powerful! Book Girls Book Club longs to do just that,” says Dr. Gail Hayes.
Hayes, the CEO and creator of the Precious! Pretty! Powerful! Girls Book Club (PPPGBC) and a former law enforcement officer, has a passion for helping girls become powerful communicators through reading, writing, speaking, and character education. One of her mains goals is to help girls grasp the power of identity before they reach middle and high school where identity is sometimes crushed in the avalanche of peer pressure.
Hayes watched her daughter face challenges when two girls bullied her at school. Hayes taught her then 6 year old daughter, Precious! Pretty! Powerful! strategies that helped her to confront the girls. After the confrontation, the girls became friends with her daughter and asked how they could become Precious! Pretty! Powerful! This helped fuel the idea of forming the PPPGBC and helping other girls learn how to handle conflict and develop a healthy self image by understanding their personal power through reading, writing, speaking, and character education.
Hayes, who is also an international author and speaker, shares the message of identity, purpose and destiny, held the first meeting of the PPPGBC in June. She understands that children also have a need to know how important they are and that they can make a positive impact on their communities.
On Saturday, September 16, 2006, The Club will host an author visit and book signing at Northgate Mall in Durham, NC. Christine Young Robinson, the author of children's books will be in town for the annual Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Conference—http://www.SCBWIcarolinas.org - and will also visit the Precious! Pretty! Powerful! Girls Book Club during her visit to Durham. The event is free and open to the public.
Girls come to the meeting after having read the book of the month. When they come to the meetings, they write in their Precious! Pretty! Powerful! Journals and discuss the book and what is going on in their lives with other girls.
Dr. Hayes has not forgotten the boys. She is familiar with the challenges they also face. Plans for the Mighty! Awesome! Powerful! Boys Book Club is under development as well.
“They form a bond of strength by focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and learning how to live well with others. I believe that’s what all parents and caregivers want for their children.”
